What’s happening?
We, Solidaires Informatique Back Market, are calling for a strike on Wednesday, September 10th, in response to the national call (#bloquonstout). We invite all Back Makers with a French contract to join us in mobilizing for social justice, climate action, and a better future.
Why are we striking?
We are protesting against the French government’s proposed 2026 austerity budget, which includes:
- The removal of two bank holidays, without remuneration (you will work for free)
- Budget cuts and job reductions for public services
- Increased financial burden on sick and disabled people
- Reduced funding for local communities
You can find more details about the planned measures here. We believe striking is essential. Major civil rights and social advances have always been won through collective mobilization and protest.
How big is this strike?
It’s a nationwide movement! 2 out of 3 French people support the call, and most major unions are backing it. The mobilization might continue beyond September 10th.
I want to join! What should I do?
If you have a French contract, you’re legally allowed to strike without prior notice. It’s your employer’s responsibility to register your absence. That said, if you want to be nice, you can:
- Let your manager know
- Set a Slack status to show your solidarity for the strike ✊
If you want to join us at the demonstration in Paris, reach out to @Nicolas B
on Slack or send us an email to backmarket (at) solidairesinformatique (dot) org
from your personal email address!
Are there any risks if I join the strike?
In France, the right to strike is protected by the Constitution, even if you’re not a French citizen. Back Market, like any employer, cannot retaliate (discipline, discriminate, or sanction you) for joining a strike. Your strike day won’t appear on your payslip.
Many of us participated in the 2023 strikes against pension reform with no issue. Keep in mind: strike hours are unpaid.
You can find more legal information here.
Should I use a Protesting Day?
No, a Protesting Day (renamed Impact Day) can’t be used for a strike:
- A Protesting Day is for volunteering with a nonprofit of your choice
- A Strike Day means you’re not working to protest for collective demands
Can we chat?
Feel free to reach out to us! We will gladly help you if you have any questions.
