Pirate Letter #1: Elevo

This is the very first issue of the Pirate Letter, our newsletter!

The managers’ side on Elevo

Managers are asked if they’d be relieved to see anyone go. Netflix asks the same question to know who to fire.

The “keeper test” is a question Netflix asks its managers: “If someone were to tell you they are leaving, would you try to retain them?” When the manager says “no”, it means the company should fire them first.

Fortunately, in France we can’t be dismissed that easily. Still, we were told the question was included in our managers’ Elevo forms. They are also asked to evaluate the “departure risk” of each of us.

Those questions are toxic. They influence managers to try to get the answers to align, so that the people they don’t want to retain become those at risk of leaving. In effect, pushing them out. At what cost?

The CSE asked the keeper test to be removed during the last meeting on January 23rd.

We urge management to follow the CSE’s demand and drop those questions. We want Back Market to remain a safe place to work, whatever the managers’ opinion–or prejudice.

In the meantime, you can ask your manager what they said about you. And let’s recall managers that GDPR allows us to see their answers.

RTO: a victory for new parents

Back Makers having a child are now exempted from coming to the office one month before the due date and two months after the end of the parental leave.

The change follows a huge mobilization. A fifth of us globally signed the open letter against the new policy. Our union met with HR. The CSE pushed hard to get at least that.

Thank you all! 💪

CSE survey and meeting notes

The CSE has released the minutes of all their past meetings–at least, those that have been approved.

They are also launching a short survey, to help them focus on what matter the most to us. It takes only a few seconds to fill. More on Slack in the #cse channel!

Poor air quality in the Paris office

The air is not renewed enough. We need to open the windows to limit the spread of diseases and CO2. An audit is expected in February. We’ll keep you posted!
